The Manitou Springs Fruitcake Toss

Manitou Springs Fruitcake Toss

The Manitou Springs Fruitcake Toss happens on the first Saturday in January in Memorial Park. It's definitely worth checking out at least once in your life.

Now I must admit that I have only attended the Manitou Springs Fruitcake Toss once in January 2002. It is definitely an interesting annual event for sure, and the idea of doing all sorts of "dastardly" things with fruitcake makes for great stories, great laughter and good press for a small town like Manitou Springs. But in all honestly, my experience at the Fruitcake Toss was way too much standing around in the cold. The event needs some kind of zip to keep people interested and occupied as they wait (sometimes for hours) to participate in their specific fruitcake event. Hmmmm.

The photo above shows a woman hurling a fruitcake. If I remember correctly, the teenage quarterback of Manitou Springs High School won the main event by hurling his fruitcake the longest distnace - His reached the roof of the Moroccan restaurant! Amazing! :)

As for me, I participated in the spatula race, a race where one needed to keep their fruitcake on a spatula while racing around Memorial Park. I won and received a free "Great Fruitcake Toss" long sleeve shirt that is still an active article of clothing in my wardrobe today. :)
